At the end of the year we want to give you an overview about chitosan-related publications in 2016 and in the second part we focus on a quite different application of chitosan – how human and veterinary vaccines could benefit from chitosan as adjuvant.
This month we deal with chitosan for skin tissue engineering. In 2016, 129 articles about “chitosan” and “tissue engineering” were published. Most publications were written by researchers from China (42 articles), India (14) and the United States (14).

In October 2016, 375 publications about chitosan were released by researchers from China (99 article), United States (31) und India (30) among others. Main issue was chitosan combined with nanoparticels, pharmaceutical preparations and tissue.
There are various applications of chitosan hydrogels. Chitosan-based materials can be used as scaffold, wound dressing or bone implant. Here, we present two studies which investigated chitosan hydrogels regarding the manipulation of structure properties as well as utilization in an animal model.

Today´s topic is chitosan for drug delivery systems. In July and August 2016, 33 articles about chitosan combined with drug delivery systems were published. As might be expected, top publisher are China (13 articles), United States (5) and India (4). The articles investigated drug release by chitosan-based micro- or nanoparticles, hydrogels and nanocomposites. Thereby controlled release of cytostatics, proteins or peptides was mainly studied. In May and June 2016, 639 articles about chitosan, regarding mostly the topics nanoparticles, pharmaceutical preparations und evaluation studies, were published. China (128 articles), United States (42) and India (21) were leading countries in chitosan research.
