Chitosan Derivatives
Heppe Medical Chitosan produces not only classical chitins and chitosans but also derivatives of these groups of substances.
Chitosan derivatives are obtained by chemical modification of the reactive chitosan groups (OH-, NH2-).
They have the advantage of possessing the unique pharmacological properties of chitosan, such as
- Anti-bacterial
- Anti-viral
- Hemostatic
- Anti-inflammatory
but at the same time are water soluble. As a result, chitosan derivatives exhibit improved biocompatibility, bioactivity, biodegradability and reduced toxicity. Due to the improved physical and chemical properties, there are extended application possibilities.
Examples of biomedical applications include:
- Medical materials (e.g. wound dressings).
- Nanomaterials e.g. nanoparticles, hydrogels, microspheres
- Drug delivery systems
- Vaccine adjuvants
- Tissue engineering
